An Intro To The Attributes Of God

Episode 15

Knowing God’s Character: How It Transforms Our Lives

What if knowing God’s character—who He is and what He’s really like—could not only deepen your faith but also transform how you see the world and interact with the people around you? I think that’s worth exploring.

We’re glad you’re here, New Creations. Let’s dive in!

Getting to Know God’s Character

Welcome to episode 15 of The We Are Recreated Podcast. In the next number of episodes, we’ll be spending time digging into the Word to find out more about what God is like.

God is interested in relationship with us. In fact, He has made a way for us to know Him intimately. As we explore His character, we’ll learn about the specific qualities—sometimes called the attributes of God—that reveal His heart and nature.

What Are the Attributes of God?

When we talk about the attributes of God, we’re referring to the qualities God has revealed about Himself to humanity.

God is infinitely beyond our understanding, yet He has made Himself knowable. He wants to live in relationship with us, so He reveals His heart, nature, and character.

A.W. Tozer explores these attributes in his book, The Attributes of God. You can find this book on our recommended resource list (link in the show notes).

It’s important to understand that God’s actions flow from His character. His identity comes first—then His actions follow.

The Names of God Reveal His Character

One of the ways God reveals His heart and character in the Bible is through His names. These names give us insight into what He is like.

El Roi: The God Who Sees

In Genesis 16:13, God reveals Himself to Hagar as El Roi, which means The God Who Sees.

Hagar, feeling rejected and alone, encountered the God who watched over her, knew her pain, and cared for her future.

Maybe you can relate to Hagar—feeling dejected, uncertain, or forgotten. But God sees you. He loves you and draws close to you.

Jehovah Tsidkenu: The Lord Our Righteousness

In Jeremiah 23:6, God reveals Himself as Jehovah Tsidkenu, which means The Lord Our Righteousness.

At a time when Israel felt hopeless in their sin, God made a promise:

“I am the Lord your righteousness. I will give you a new heart. I will redeem, purify, and recreate you.”

This promise applies to us as well. Our righteousness comes from God’s grace, not from our own efforts.

If you want to explore more of God’s names, I recommend the book The Peace and Power of Knowing God’s Name by Kay Arthur. It’s a beautiful devotional-style read that reflects on God’s character and faithfulness. The link is in the show notes.

Why Study the Attributes of God?

You might be wondering, Why bother studying the attributes of God?

It’s because knowing God’s character deepens our relationship with Him. When we know who He is, we learn to trust Him more fully and experience His grace in our everyday lives.

As William Lane Craig explains:

“If you know someone is reliable and tells the truth, you can have confidence in that person. The same is true with God. Knowing His character helps us trust Him.”

When we understand God’s nature—His faithfulness, love, and power—it strengthens our faith.

Three Ways We Discover God’s Character

We can only know about God through the ways He reveals Himself. There are three primary places where we discover His character:

  1. The World – God’s creation reflects His creativity, power, and grandeur.
    • Romans 1:20 says:

“Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen.”

    • The beauty and order of creation point us to the Creator.
  2. The Word – The Bible is God’s written revelation. It shows us who He is, how He acts, and what He values.
    • Psalm 19:1-2 says:

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

  3. The Life of Jesus – Jesus is the perfect revelation of God’s character.
    • Colossians 1:15 says:

“The Son is the image of the invisible God.”

    • When we look at Jesus’ life, we see God’s love, compassion, and righteousness on display.

What Is God Really Like?

Perhaps three of the most significant and unique attributes of God are:

  • Omniscience – God is all-knowing.
  • Omnipotence – God is all-powerful.
  • Omnipresence – God is present everywhere, at all times.

These qualities are exclusive to God. No created being—angels, demons, or humans—shares these attributes.

God’s Character Reflected in Love

In 1 John 4:8, we read:

“God is love.”

When we look at 1 Corinthians 13, which describes love, we see a beautiful picture of God’s character:

  • God is patient.
  • God is kind.
  • God does not envy.
  • God is not boastful or proud.
  • God keeps no record of wrongs.
  • God always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres.
  • God never fails.

These descriptions show us the heart of God and how He relates to us.

God’s Attributes Revealed Through the Fruit of the Spirit

In Galatians 5:22, Paul lists the fruit of the Spirit, which reflect God’s attributes:

  • Love
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Faithfulness
  • Gentleness
  • Self-control

Billy Graham once said:

“The fruit of the Spirit are attributes of Jesus Christ Himself.”

As we depend on the Holy Spirit, God’s character is formed in us and expressed through us.

  5. God is omniscient.
  6. God is wise.
